A guide to help you choose what time of day is the best time for a photo shoot depending your stylistic preferences!
If you’ve been looking to book a senior session, an engagement, or even a family session, but just aren’t quite sure when the best time for a photo shoot would be when it comes to time of day, do not sweat the details! I’ve listed out some info to help guide you to make the best decision based off of your stylistic preferences!
Most everyone knows of the special light us photographers call “Golden Hour”…
But did you know that this dreamy time of day doesn’t just happen in the evenings? Golden hour should technically be called golden hours, because the first hour after sunrise can bring beautiful warm light too. You just have to be willing to wake up bright and early to catch it! However, golden hour in the evenings still remains a popular choice. Why do photographers and clients love this time of day so much? Well, when the sun’s light fills the camera lens, it creates this beautiful haze called ethereal haze. It pours into the entire frame and is the reason we are able to capture such warm and glowy images.
Additionally, golden hour is really just a figure of speech, it can last for more than just an hour and as the sun continues to set (or rise) the hues and lighting change, making every moment exciting as the glow from the sun alters giving us different outcomes in our photos minute by minute. This time of day is a favorite and books up the FASTEST! So if you’re wanting this vibe for your session, be sure to book ASAP!
Looking for something a little less dreamy?
Overcast days are actually great for shooting. The clouds work as a natural reflectant and cover any direct sunlight, so you won’t have to worry about strange shadows ruining a shot or the sun blinding you! However, if you prefer harsher light, earlier on a sunny day would be the best time for you to have your session. The sun is at its highest at noon, which means it will be shining directly down you, so if the timing is planned out right to avoid shadows, then it’s possible to create some bold and edgy images when shooting in direct sunlight or in a fully shaded space.
Neither of these options really your thing? No worries! There’s always indoors!
Now, unless you’re shooting in a studio with artificial lighting, you’re going to want to pay attention to how much natural light fills the indoor space. Is the space East or West facing? Does the most natural light fill the room earlier in the day or later? Do you want to capture shadows for a specific look? Or do you want a light and airy atmosphere? These small observations can make all the difference in how your images may turn out, so be sure you know or your photographer knows the space well!
