A Fall Engagement Session in Door County, Wisconsin
There's a stretch of time every autumn when Door County feels like it was painted just for a camera.
The maples go orange and red, the birches glow gold against the dark green of the pines, and the late-day light coming off Green Bay softens everything it touches.
That's exactly when Cass, Amanda, and I headed north up into Door County for their fall engagement session, and it turned into one of my favorite days of the season.
We planned this one with a lot of intention: multiple outfits, multiple locations, and enough breathing room to actually enjoy the drive up the peninsula.
Fall weekends in Door County can be busy with color tours, winery visits, and road construction, so we built in buffer time. That ended up being a gift. We had extra time to travel, wander, and soak in some of the most beautiful fall color I've seen in Wisconsin.
Celebrating Love, Exactly as It Is
Before anything else, I want to say this: every couple deserves to be photographed as exactly who they are. Cass and Amanda are easygoing, affectionate, and genuinely fun to be around, and my whole goal was to give them a session that felt like them, with no forced poses or awkward "fix your hands" moments, just two people in love on a beautiful fall afternoon.
If you're a same-sex or LGBTQ+ couple looking for an engagement or wedding photographer in Wisconsin, I want you to know you're welcome here. You'll never have to explain your relationship or worry about outdated, gendered posing. We'll focus on connection, comfort, and the way the two of you naturally are together.
Peninsula State Park and Eagle Tower in Fish Creek
We started the afternoon at Peninsula State Park near Fish Creek, beginning around Eagle Tower. I love this spot for a first location because it gives so much variety without having to go far off the trail: the canopy walkway and accessible ramp winding through the trees, wooded trails, overlooks, and the tower itself.
For this first look, Cass and Amanda went casual and comfortable, which was perfect for easing into the session. We walked the ramp, wandered into the trees, and grabbed a mix of close, candid images and wider environmental frames that show off how big and colorful the woods were. Starting relaxed like this helps couples forget about the camera, and by the time we left the park, they were laughing and completely at ease.
Anderson Dock in Ephraim
From there, it was a short drive up to Ephraim and Anderson Dock, home of the iconic painted warehouse covered in years of visitors' names and messages. This gave us a completely different look from the woods: clean and classic, with that colorful building, the white architecture Ephraim is known for, the docks, boats, and the shoreline of Eagle Harbor.
I love pairing a timeless outfit with a backdrop like this. The warehouse's color and texture add personality, while the water and white buildings keep everything bright and simple. One tip if you're planning photos here: parking can be tight on busy fall weekends, so give yourself a few extra minutes.
Ellison Bluff in Ellison Bay
After a quick outfit change, we headed to Ellison Bluff State Natural Area and Ellison Bluff County Park. This is where we slowed everything down.
The overlook sits more than 100 feet above the water, and it's dramatic in the best way. Cass and Amanda switched into an earthy, elevated look that felt right at home with the cliffs, the water, and the fall color along the bluff. Rather than spending a long time repeating the same view, we focused on a smaller set of strong, romantic images, giving them variety without a gallery full of the same background.
Jens Jensen's Winding Road Near Gills Rock
Next, we headed toward the tip of the peninsula. We stopped for one last outfit change and a quick snack so that, once the light got good, nobody had to change again. For this final look, they wore their most romantic outfits, perfect against the fall foliage, the greens, and the water still to come.
Our first stop up north was the famous winding stretch of Highway 42 just past Gills Rock toward Northport, the curvy road designed by landscape architect Jens Jensen. With the trees arching over the road and that lower, directional light filtering through the leaves, it's one of the most photographed fall spots in Door County for good reason. (Safety always comes first here, and we work carefully around traffic.)
Sunset at Gills Rock Harbor
We wrapped up the day at Gills Rock Harbor, arriving with plenty of time before sunset. The light over the water turned warm and golden, and we finished with a few silhouettes as the sun dropped below the horizon. After a full afternoon of exploring the peninsula together, it was the perfect quiet ending to the session.
Why Fall Is Perfect for Engagement Photos in Wisconsin
Fall is one of my favorite times of year for engagement sessions in Wisconsin. The color does a lot of the work for you, the temperatures are comfortable for layering, and the earlier sunset means golden light arrives at a very reasonable hour. Door County takes all of that and adds water, bluffs, harbors, and small-town charm, all within a short drive of each other.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time for a Door County fall engagement session?
Fall color in Door County typically peaks from early to mid-October, though it shifts each year with the weather. I recommend booking well ahead, since fall weekends fill quickly, and keeping a little flexibility in case color comes early or late.
What are the best locations for engagement photos in Door County?
Some of my favorites are Peninsula State Park and Eagle Tower in Fish Creek, Anderson Dock in Ephraim, Ellison Bluff in Ellison Bay, the winding Jens Jensen road near Gills Rock, and Gills Rock Harbor for sunset. Together, they give you woods, water, bluffs, small-town character, and a classic sunset in one afternoon.
Do you photograph same-sex and LGBTQ+ engagement sessions?
Absolutely. Every couple is welcome, and I tailor posing and direction to the two of you rather than relying on outdated, gendered posing. My goal is for you to feel comfortable, celebrated, and fully yourselves.
How many outfits should we bring to a fall engagement session?
For a longer, multi-location session like this one, three to four outfits works beautifully, moving from casual to classic to elevated to your most romantic look. For a shorter session, one or two outfits is plenty. My [Fall Outfit Guide](https://info.samplawskiphotography.com/fall-guide) can help you plan looks that work together.
Do we need a park pass for photos at Peninsula State Park?
Wisconsin state parks require a vehicle admission sticker or day pass, so plan to purchase one before or when you arrive. I'll include reminders like this in your session plan so there are no surprises.
How long does a multi-location Door County engagement session take?
A session like Cass and Amanda's covers most of an afternoon into sunset, including drive time, outfit changes, and buffer time for fall traffic. I'll build a custom plan around your locations, outfit changes, and sunset time.
What should we bring to a longer engagement session?
Bring snacks, water, comfortable shoes for walking between spots, and a layer or two for when the temperature drops near the water at sunset. Hydration and a quick snack break make a big difference in how energized you feel and look. Did you read snacks? Snacks are key to keep the energy flowing throughout your session.
Do you travel for engagement sessions outside the Chippewa Valley?
Yes. I'm based in the Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire area and love traveling throughout Wisconsin, including Door County, for engagement sessions and weddings. Reach out with your ideas, and we'll plan a session that fits your story and your favorite places.
