The Complete Guide to a Dixon’s Apple Orchard Wedding

Dakota & Kaylee’s Wedding Day, Venue Tips, Photography Ideas & Planning Advice from an Eau Claire Wedding Photographer

Some wedding venues impress you the moment you pull into the parking lot.

Others slowly reveal themselves throughout the day.

Dixon’s Apple Orchard in Cadott, Wisconsin, belongs to the second category.

At first glance, it’s a beautiful orchard tucked into the rolling countryside just outside of Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire. But after photographing weddings here, walking the property throughout the seasons, and watching couples experience one of the biggest days of their lives, I’ve come to appreciate something much deeper.

Dixon’s isn’t defined by one iconic backdrop.

It’s defined by the experience.

It’s the quiet walk through the orchard before anyone else arrives.

It’s watching a father drive his daughter to the ceremony in the venue’s iconic Jeep while guests smile from beneath the trees.

It’s hearing laughter drift from the groom’s suite while the horses and donkeys graze nearby.

It’s guests gathering around the outdoor bar during cocktail hour, reconnecting with family and friends while the newlyweds slip away for portraits.

It’s the smell of apple trees after a warm summer rain.

It’s dust catching the evening sunlight along the country roads.

It’s the final glow of sunset stretching across the pasture before everyone heads back inside to celebrate.

Those are the moments that stay with people.

Long after the flowers have dried.

Long after the music has ended.

Long after the cake has been eaten.

And that’s exactly why Dakota and Kaylee’s wedding felt so special.

Meet Dakota & Kaylee

Every wedding has its own personality.

Some are elegant and formal.

Some are energetic from beginning to end.

Dakota and Kaylee’s wedding was something I wish every couple could experience.

It felt genuine. Nothing about their day felt forced.

They weren’t trying to recreate someone else’s Pinterest board or follow every wedding trend of the year. They cared about spending time together, celebrating with the people who matter most, and trusting their vendor team to take care of the rest.

That trust changes everything.

As a photographer, my favorite images rarely come from sharing prompts and our safe shots. They come from giving them the space to simply be together.

The smile after a quiet joke. The squeeze of a hand. A tear that catches someone by surprise.

The look that says, “We actually made it.”

Dakota and Kaylee gave themselves permission to experience those moments instead of rushing through them, and their gallery reflects that in every chapter of their wedding day.

Why I Recommend the Orchard for a First Look

One question I hear almost every time I photograph a wedding at Dixon’s Apple Orchard is, “Where should we do our first look?”

Most people immediately think of The Woods. The Woods location… It’s beautiful. It’s shaded. It’s intimate. But after photographing weddings here, I’d actually recommend something different.

The orchard.

There’s something incredibly fitting about beginning your wedding day surrounded by the very landscape that gives this venue its identity.

The rows of apple trees create a sense of privacy without feeling isolated. As one partner walks down the lane, the anticipation quietly builds with every step. The soft filtering light through the leaves creates beautiful, even skin tones, while the surrounding orchard naturally frames the moment without distracting from it.

What I love most, though, isn’t the scenery.

It’s the feeling.

The orchard slows people down. You’re not standing on a stage. You’re walking together through one of the most peaceful places on the property, creating opportunities for something I value deeply as a photographer… honest, unscripted moments.

After the first look, I almost always encourage couples to stay in the orchard for another twenty minutes.

Not because we need more couple photos… because that’s when the magic happens. The nerves begin to melt away. Conversation becomes easier, and the excitement settles into genuine joy. The little in-between moments… walking hand in hand, laughing about the morning, taking a deep breath before the ceremony… often become the photographs couples choose for the cover of their heirloom album years later.

Andrew’s Venue Notes

If this were my wedding, I’d schedule the first look in the orchard every single time.

Not because it’s the most photographed location. Because it isn’t. That’s exactly why I personally love it.

The orchard gives you room to breathe. The rows of trees naturally separate you from the rest of the venue, creating a quiet space that feels like it’s yours alone. You aren’t performing for guests or surrounded by distractions. It’s just the two of you taking in the reality that after months… or maybe years of planning, your wedding day has finally arrived.

Then I’d build in twenty unhurried minutes. No rushing to the next event. No checking the clock every two minutes.

Just time to walk. Talk. Laugh. Cry if you need to.

Those aren’t “photo opportunities.” They’re marriage opportunities. The photographs simply become a beautiful reminder of what that felt like.

A Wedding Venue That Rewards Couples Who Slow Down

One of the greatest opportunities of Dixon’s Apple Orchard is that it doesn’t require you to leave.

Everything you need is already here.

The bridal suite is bright, comfortable, and filled with beautiful natural light that makes getting-ready photographs feel clean, timeless, and elegant. There’s room for hair and makeup, space for bridesmaids to relax, and enough quiet corners for emotional moments between mothers, daughters, and lifelong friends.

Across the property, the groom’s suite offers a completely different atmosphere. Nestled near the horses and donkeys, it’s a place where the guys can slow down, share a drink, tell stories, and enjoy one another’s company before the ceremony begins.

That separation creates anticipation.

Then, just before the ceremony, the venue delivers one of its most iconic traditions.

Kaylee arrived with her father in Dixon’s vintage Jeep.

Guests immediately smiled. Children pointed. Cameras came out.

It’s one of those details no one forgets because it feels authentic to the property, not something brought in for the day.

It’s uniquely Dixon’s.

And for couples looking for another memorable entrance, the horse and carriage offers an equally timeless experience. Whether you’re embracing the orchard's rustic charm or envisioning a classic countryside arrival, these signature touches are part of what makes this venue unlike any other in western Wisconsin.

Cocktail Hour Done Right

One of the most overlooked parts of a wedding day isn’t the ceremony or the reception.

It’s cocktail hour. At Dixon’s Apple Orchard, cocktail hour naturally centers around the outdoor bar, and it works beautifully.

Guests have a place to gather, enjoy an open bar, reconnect with family, and settle into the celebration while the newlyweds step away for portraits.

From a timeline perspective, this is invaluable.

You’re not asking guests to wait with nothing to do. They’re genuinely enjoying themselves. This is the time candid moments happen… smiles, laughs, kids at play, family enjoying time with Harry the Horse and his pal the donkey.

Meanwhile, we can move through family photographs if we haven’t completed those prior to the ceremony, wedding party pictures, and a handful of romantic images without feeling rushed.

When everyone is having a great time, no one notices that you’ve disappeared for a few minutes. And that’s exactly how it should feel.

Never Skip Sunset at Dixon’s

If I could give every couple getting married here one piece of advice, it would be this:

Protect fifteen minutes for sunset. Not thirty. Not an hour.

Just fifteen intentional minutes because something extraordinary happens as the sun begins to settle behind the property.

The pasture comes alive. The apple trees glow with warm backlight. The tall grasses catch every ray of golden light. The pond transforms into something special with the uplit fountain.

And the dirt roads… The dirt roads become magic.

As vehicles travel slowly across the property, a soft cloud of dust hangs in the evening air. When the setting sun shines through it, the light scatters into warm beams that create incredible depth, texture, and atmosphere around the couple.

It’s impossible to fake. You can’t add it later in Photoshop. You can’t recreate it somewhere else.

It’s one of those fleeting moments that only exists for a few minutes each evening, and when everything aligns, it produces some of the most cinematic, naturally beautiful wedding photographs you’ll ever see.

Those fifteen minutes are almost always worth more than another fifteen minutes sitting at your dinner table.

You’ll have the rest of your life to remember what the meal tasted like.

You’ll spend the rest of your life looking at these photographs.
